Core-Plus Mathematics

For nearly 30 years the Core-Plus Mathematics Project (CPMP) engaged in iterative cycles of design, development, classroom trials, revision, and evaluation of innovative problem-based, inquiry-oriented instructional materials for high school mathematics.

An analysis of the Core-Plus Mathematics series by EdReports found the three-year core program meets criteria for alignment with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics for high school in terms of content, focus, coherence, rigor, and mathematical practices. The instructional materials also meet EdReports expectations for effective lesson structure and pacing. The project has also accumulated an extensive body of empirical research demonstrating effectiveness of the Core-Plus Mathematics program in reaching its goals.

Research and development work of the Core-Plus Mathematics Project was supported by a series of grants from the National Science Foundation to Western Michigan University with Chris Hirsch as the initiator and project director.

The resulting student texts, teacher resources, and computer software were published in a series of commercial editions. Rights to the materials have now been returned to the Authors (below).
